"Carving Destiny: The Untold Story of Panini’s Relentless Willpower"
Many years ago, while I was teaching my nephew the Kannada language, we came across a story in his textbook that stirred something deep within me. That story has stayed with me ever since. I’ve shared it with friends many times, and today, I’d like to share it with you — not just as a tale from the past, but as a lesson in unshakable will and self-belief.
The story takes place in an ancient village that had a renowned Gurukul — a traditional place of learning. Every mother in the region dreamed of sending her child there to receive an education. One day, a hopeful mother brought her son to the Gurukul, requesting the guru to accept him as a student.
However, the Gurukul followed a unique tradition. Admission was granted only to those children whose palms bore the “line of knowledge” — a specific mark that the guru believed foretold a future in learning.
The guru examined the boy’s palm but found no such line. He refused admission, stating that destiny did not favor the boy for scholarly pursuits. The mother pleaded earnestly, but rules were rules.
That night, devastated yet determined, the boy did something unimaginable — he took a shard of glass or stone and cut a line onto his own palm where the guru had said none existed. Blood poured from his hand…
